Doctor... As a voice for many breast cancer patients, I would like to say we realize that you are busy and that you do have other patients to spend time with, besides us, but we truly appreciate it when you take the time with us to really "hear" our complaints...really listen. When we come to you, we come to you for your knowledge and guidance in hopes that you will be able to take our sick bodies and make them whole again. We are frightened and look to you for your expertise. We admire and respect what you do, but sometimes we are reluctant to tell you things because prior complaints have been dismissed as being in our minds, yet the issues are still present and very real. We understand that you cannot perform miracles, but just knowing that you are there "in our corner" goes a long way in helping us to keep hope alive.
Please do not give up on us, when and if we enter stage IV. That is when we need you most. We need you to fight with us. Give it all that you have, if you will, to keep us going...possibly until a better treatment comes along. When you look at us, think about your mother, wife or your daughter and how you would want their physician to take care of them if they had cancer. Take care of us just as you would want you loved ones taken care of.
We truly appreciate kind words, smiles and good bedside manners. It is hard enough when we have to be so ill. Kindness and positive interactions go a long way in helping us to feel better.
Please take the time to explain things to us so that we can understand what is going on in our bodies. If we are unable to understand on your terms, please come down to our level of understanding, so that we will have comprehension.
Please have patience with us. You cannot imagine the jolt that is sent through us when given the diagnosis of cancer. Give us just a little time to let our head clear before everything is thrown at us, all at once. Sometimes we may need to record the things that you tell us because we do not have the mind to take notes or to understand much of what is being said, at this difficult, emotional time. Please do not be aggravated by the tape recorder. It is our way of making sure that we retain as much info as possible.
Together, we are a team. You...and me. Together, we can strive to do all that is possible to win.
